In his book Grace and Mortgage, first published in 1997, Peter Selby, then Bishop of Worcester, and a noted theologian, established the connection between the biblical language of faith and the reality of global indebtedness. Contrasting the divine economy of grace with the slavery produced by debt, Selby argued that in “spiritual-ising” the Gospel message we falsely allow ourselves to worship both God and Mammon. He demonstrates how to break that idolatrous collusion.
O God, Maker of the heavens and the earth, all that we have is your gift.
You have enabled us to create money to be an instrument of trade for our wellbeing. Make us wise stewards of this and every gift, so that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen |
